What Do the Brisbane 2032 Emblems Mean?

BRIS2032 — Independent Coverage  ·  Last updated 10 October 2026

A cockatoo, and a lot packed into its crest. Brisbane 2032 launched its Olympic and Paralympic emblems on Monday 5 October 2026 at South Bank. The Olympic version is a Pink Cockatoo and the Paralympic version a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo. Inside the crest sit the outline of Queensland and the Olympic and Paralympic flames, and the feathers are grouped three and two, a nod to ’32. Organisers also say the design carries First Nations meaning, with cockatoos seen as messengers. It isn’t the mascot. That comes later.

TL;DR

  • The emblems were launched on 5 October 2026 at a community event in the South Bank parklands.
  • Olympic emblem: Pink Cockatoo. Paralympic emblem: Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.
  • The crest hides Queensland’s outline, the Games flames and a three-and-two feather pattern for ’32.
  • The design leaked online the Friday before. The mascot is still to come.

What is in the Brisbane 2032 emblem?

Four things, according to the organising committee’s release published by the International Paralympic Committee. Each one is worked into the cockatoo’s head and crest rather than drawn as a separate symbol.

ElementWhat organisers say it means
Two cockatoosPink Cockatoo for the Olympics, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo for the Paralympics. Picked for their cheeky, playful nature.
Queensland outlineThe host state, home to Australia’s third Olympic Games and second Paralympic Games.
The flamesThe Olympic and Paralympic flames, set inside the crest.
Three and two feathersA subtle nod to a home Games in ’32.

Organisers told the Associated Press the design also carries First Nations elements, with cockatoos “seen as messengers carrying cultural meaning.”

How was the emblem revealed?

In pieces. Six parts of the emblems were revealed over several days, with Olympic, Paralympic and sporting names finding them around Queensland. The IPC calls it a first in Games history. The finished emblems were launched at South Bank on the Monday evening.

It didn’t go fully to plan. The Associated Press reported that an explainer video briefly went up on the Games’ YouTube channel the Friday before, and screenshots spread fast. Organisers called a news conference over the weekend. Chief marketing officer Brent Hill took it in his stride: “the publicity has been incredible.”

What have officials said about it?

Plenty, all of it warm. Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris said the emblems invite the world to “learn more, visit, invest” and said they were tested with local and international audiences before the launch.

IPC President Andrew Parsons said the Paralympic emblem “put a really big smile on my face.” Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner called the city “a little bit cheeky,” per the AP. For the Paralympics side of the story, see our Paralympics guide.

What we can’t tell you yet

What the mascot will be, or when it’s coming. Organisers have only said it will be revealed closer to the Games. Nor has official merchandise carrying the emblems been announced with dates or prices. We’ll update this when either lands.
