Brisbane's CBD. The main stadium is rising at Victoria Park, just north of the city.

It's started. Excavation machinery moved onto the Victoria Park site in early June 2026, marking the official start of construction on Brisbane 2032's main Olympic stadium — almost five years after the city was awarded the Games. After years of venue reviews and political back-and-forth, the centrepiece of Brisbane 2032 is now physically under way.

TL;DR
  • Construction on the Victoria Park main stadium began in early June 2026.
  • Two multinational joint ventures are shortlisted to build it; a final contractor is expected later in 2026.
  • The design, chosen via an international competition, features a walkable platform evoking a Queenslander veranda; Japanese firm Azusa Sekkei is on the team.
  • The stadium will host athletics and the opening and closing ceremonies.
  • Indigenous, heritage and environmental groups continue to challenge the build.

What's happening on site?

Work began after protesters at the park were moved on and machinery was brought in to start excavation. The build is being overseen by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority, which has shortlisted two multinational joint ventures to deliver the arena after a five-month assessment of bids from Australian and international firms. A final contractor is expected to be named later in 2026.

What will it look like?

The Queensland government unveiled the winning design from an international competition, showing a stadium wrapped by a walkable platform that echoes the wraparound veranda of a classic Queenslander. The design team works alongside Azusa Sekkei, the Japanese practice involved in over 100 sporting venues including the National Stadium used at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The 158-acre Victoria Park site sits just north of central Brisbane.

The opposition hasn't gone away

The stadium remains contested. Indigenous, heritage and environmental groups have challenged the plans, and ten applications were lodged with the federal environment minister seeking protection for a significant Aboriginal site at the park. Construction starting does not end those disputes, and they are worth watching as work ramps up.
